Born in 1982 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Msafiri Zawose is a leading figure in Gogo-fusion music who bridges his ancestral Gogo tradition with modern rhythms and production. Son of the legendary Dr. Hukwe Zawose, Msafiri mastered classic Wagogo instruments—including the ilimba (thumb piano / kalimba variation), zeze (bowed or plucked lute), ngoma (drums), marimba, flute, and more—from an early age. By his early teens he was already performing across Tanzania, and after his father’s passing in 2003, Msafiri stepped into the role of preserving and innovating the family’s musical legacy.
Over the years, Msafiri has released multiple albums—Mbotela, Uhamiaji, Tanganyika, among others—and collaborated with international labels like Soundway Records and with producers across East Africa and beyond. His work is known for its lush vocal harmonies, virtuosic instrumental performances, and its ability to move seamlessly between deeply traditional sounds and modern, danceable electronica. Songs like Nzala Urugu, Pole Pole, and his more recent single Pepeta show how he continues to evolve: staying rooted in Gogo culture while pushing its boundaries.
Whether as a solo performer, with his family band, or in hybrid DJ/live settings, Msafiri’s performances are immersive journeys—alive with ritual, innovation, and joy. He also runs workshops, teaching instruments like the ilimba and zeze, and shares cultural dance and song. His global tours and festival appearances (in Europe, the USA, Asia, Middle East) have helped grow a devoted international following who value authenticity, tradition, and sonic creativity.
